Intermittent showers and a biting wind failed to deter the crowd who turned out at Kingaroy’s T.J. O’Neill Oval on Saturday for the Geiger Family Fun Charity Sports Day.<\/p>\n

The day was jointly organised by the Kingaroy Red Ants and Kingaroy Cricket Club to support the family of Lynda Geiger, who was recently diagnosed with a terminal illness.<\/p>\n

Hardy touch footballers braved the bleak conditions for a round-robin competition played on three fields.<\/p>\n

And inside the clubhouse, a slightly less brave – but much warmer – crowd of supporters cheered them on.<\/p>\n

Between the showers children enjoyed a jumping castle while adults perused a huge baked goods stand and could even test their mettle in sumo suits.<\/p>\n

About 40 volunteers helped to entertain and feed the crowd, and organisers said the turnout “well exceeded” their expectations.<\/p>\n

The event is the latest in a series of fundraisers to help the family.<\/p>\n

Family friend Brett Porter said over the past couple of months around $25,000 had been raised to help the family.<\/p>\n

“I would like to thank everyone for their help and support over the weekend. It is really amazing to see how this family has touched so many people in their lives,” Brett wrote on Facebook.<\/p>\n

“The event was a 100% success …so once again thank you to everyone for your hard effort in helping to make a difference to this wonderful family.”<\/p>\n
