The South Burnett is about to be overrun by cats but there’s no need to call the RSPCA, these cats are purrfectly happy to hang around the Kingaroy Town Hall.<\/p>\n

The South Burnett Musical Comedy Society’s production of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical “Cats” is about to hit the stage after almost six months of rehearsals.<\/p>\n

“It’s been a huge effort,” director Craig Reiger said.<\/p>\n

The cats have had to learn 21 songs as well as dancing routines.<\/p>\n

The musical has a cast of close to 50 “cats”, ranging in age from 4 to 85.<\/p>\n

There’s cats from St John’s and St Mary’s schools as well as Taabinga, Kingaroy and Wondai State Schools and Kingaroy and Nanango State High Schools.<\/p>\n

Craig said it took each cat about 90 minutes to prepare their make-up and costumes before performances.<\/p>\n

Auditions for the production began in February with practice starting in March.<\/p>\n

The South Burnett Musical Comedy Society (SBMCS) is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year so this is a very special production for the team.<\/p>\n

As well as the six performances in Kingaroy, the SBMCS is taking its annual production on the road for the first time.<\/p>\n

They will be performing Cats at Maryborough’s Brolga Theatre on Saturday, September 6.<\/p>\n

The songs in Cats are based on the “Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats” by T.S. Eliot.<\/p>\n

Cats is one of the most popular musicals of all time. It ran in London’s West End from 1981-2002 and on Broadway from 1982-2000, setting records along the way.<\/p>\n
