There\u2019s about 6-9 seeds in each pod.<\/p>\n<p>They grow on vine-like shoots which can be grown most of the year but really thrive in the cooler months of Spring.<\/p>\n<p>My wife often plants peas and when they are in season we pick them on a\u00a0daily basis.<\/p>\n<p><strong>There\u2019s something special about cracking the\u00a0pods\u00a0open and eating\u00a0the fresh peas\u00a0straight from the garden.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There are a few different varieties available such as dried split peas which are simmered and used to make soups or a mushy pea mash; while Snow Peas and Sugar Snap Peas are a couple of varieties which are eaten fresh, pod-and-all in stir fries or salads.<\/p>\n<p>Petits Pois are normal green peas which are harvested young and tiny, then steamed or boiled as a vegetable.<\/p>\n<p>The immature shoots of the pea plant can be picked while tender and used in Asian stir fries.<\/p>\n<p>I once saw dried peas coated in Wasabi and eaten a snack food (kind of like peanuts).<\/p>\n<p>Peas are also sold frozen or tinned, but I don\u2019t really like them because they aren\u2019t as firm as the freshly harvested peas.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>* * *<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/peas4.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-77773\" title=\"Green peas\" src=\"http:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/peas4.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/peas4.png 300w, https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/peas4-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/peas4-50x50.png 50w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Green Pea Risotto<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>This is my favourite risotto recipe. Some people find its fluorescent green colour a little confronting, however they quickly become fans after their first taste.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>25ml olive oil<\/li>\n<li>1 garlic clove, crushed<\/li>\n<li>\u00bd onion, finely diced<\/li>\n<li>200g frozen peas<\/li>\n<li>850ml chicken or vegetable stock, hot<\/li>\n<li>175g aborio rice<\/li>\n<li>100ml dry white wine<\/li>\n<li>25g parmesan, grated<\/li>\n<li>salt and pepper<\/li>\n<li>30g pea shoots<\/li>\n<li>extra-virgin olive oil, to drizzle<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol>\n<li>Fry onion with olive oil in a saucepan until tender, add garlic and cook for 1 more minute.<\/li>\n<li>Meanwhile, puree 100g peas into a food processor with a 100ml stock.<\/li>\n<li>Add rice to the onion, increase heat and sizzle the rice for 1 minute.<\/li>\n<li>Add the wine, then simmer until completely absorbed.<\/li>\n<li>Continue ladles of stock one at a time, allowing it to absorb and stirring continuously until the rice is tender and has a good creamy consistency.<\/li>\n<li>Stir in the pur\u00e9ed peas, and the remaining whole peas.<\/li>\n<li>Add parmesan and season with salt and pepper.<\/li>\n<li>Serve in shallow bowls and top with some pea shoots and a drizzle of olive oil.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Serves 4.\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><A HREF=\"http:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/ford-on-food\/\">Read more Ford On Food columns<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As a kid, I hated green peas.
