Organisers of Saturday night’s “Dinner With The Captains” in Kingaroy are confident they have raised more than $38,000 for the Cancer Council’s 2014 Relay For Life campaign … but that figure could well go up over the next few days.<\/p>\n

South Burnett Relay For Life patron Carl Rackemann said the auction of sporting memorabilia by itself raised more than $17,000.<\/p>\n

Then there were the numerous raffles on the night …<\/p>\n

The Kingaroy Town Hall was packed for the dinner, which featured three Australian sporting legends live on stage:\u00a0Tommy Raudonikis (rugby league), Libby Trickett (swimming) and Allan Border (cricket).<\/p>\n

The trio shared personal anecdotes about their sporting careers as they were interviewed by South Burnett mayor (and former radio announcer) Wayne Kratzmann.<\/p>\n

Special applause was reserved for rugby league great Tommy Raudonikis who insisted on still coming to the dinner despite the fact he is currently undergoing treatment for throat cancer.<\/p>\n

“We had the microphone turned right up so people could hear him. He got a standing ovation,” Carl said.<\/p>\n

The auction featured special pieces of sporting memorabilia, including a unique framed portrait of batting great Sir Donald Bradman promoting Peter’s ice cream. The framed photograph was surrounded by 16 Weet Bix cards showing the Don in action, including one signed by the great man himself.<\/p>\n

“It was donated and framed for the auction by Ray Mason, from Maroon Memorabilia Qld, \u00a0who is a cancer survivor himself,” Carl said.<\/p>\n

Carl said he had received “lots of great feedback” about the dinner and he was sure the 420-plus patrons in attendance had enjoyed a fantastic night.<\/p>\n
