A public meeting will be held in Cherbourg tomorrow (July 29) to allow local residents to find out more about proposed changes to Queensland law that could introduce freehold title into Aboriginal communities.<\/p>\n

The meeting will be held from 1:00pm to 2:30pm at the Cherbourg Community Hall.<\/p>\n

It will be hosted by MPs from State Parliament’s Agriculture, Resources and Environment Committee who will be explaining the proposed changes and seeking feedback from Cherbourg residents.<\/p>\n

Private one-on-one meetings with committee members can also be arranged with prior notice (phone 1800-504-022).<\/p>\n

In May, Premier Campbell Newman announced new legislation that, if passed, would introduce freehold home ownership into communities, which would mean the home owners would be able to take out mortgages and use their property as collateral for loans etc.<\/p>\n

Aboriginal Affairs Minister Glen Elmes said the Bill would not force freehold on any community.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe want to work with communities to identify what\u2019s best for each one, and to what extent \u2013 if at all \u2013 freehold land can be made part of the community,\u201d he said at the time.<\/p>\n
