The Wondai Wolves put on a strong display against Nanango on Saturday, proving why they’ve only lost two games so far in the 2014 South Burnett rugby league competition.<\/p>\n

The game, played at Cherbourg, began evenly enough with neither side managing to trouble the scorer for the first 10 minutes.<\/p>\n

The Wolves’ Luke Tilney finally broke the drought, to be followed a couple of minutes later by the Stags’ Ashley Smallwood. Andrew Hewitt’s kick was on target – putting Nanango into the lead, 6-4, for the first and only time during the match.<\/p>\n

At the restart, a knock-on at the first tackle gave the ball back to Wondai. Troy Kerkow scored just four rucks later, setting the flavour for the rest of the game.<\/p>\n

Nanango couldn’t take a trick with simple mistakes costing them possession.<\/p>\n

At the midway point in the half, a Wondai mistake grounding the ball gave possession to Nanango. But just seconds later Wondai took the ball back and Shane Cliff scored beside the posts.<\/p>\n

The Wolves scored four more times before half-time (Scott Sims, Troy Kerkow, Shane Cliff and Luke Hedges) to go into the break ahead 36-6.<\/p>\n

However, the Stags came out determined after the break and looked like a new team.<\/p>\n

In the first 10 minutes they went over Wondai’s line on three occasions – only to be denied each time.<\/p>\n

Finally Ashley Smallwood made no mistake from a scrum win and notched up his second try for the day.<\/p>\n

Nanango then went in again, with Brendon Lacey scoring in the corner, taking the score to 36-14.<\/p>\n

But sadly for the Stags’ fans in attendance, that was the end of Nanango’s comeback.<\/p>\n

Wondai scored twice more before the full-time siren (Luke Hedges and Luke Tilney) to take the final score to 46-20.<\/p>\n

The scheduled match between Cherbourg and Kingaroy was not played after a default by the Red Ants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
