It was an all-South Burnett U12s final at Wondai’s massive Mini-Mod Carnival on Saturday, with Nanango emerging triumphant after a long day of junior footie fun.<\/p>\n

The round robin junior rugby league competition, which is organised by Wondai Proston JRL and played with modified rules, is always a big shot in the arm for the local economy.<\/p>\n

This year it attracted 53 teams from across the Wide Bay: there were 11 teams in U7s, 16 in U8s, 14 in U10s and 12 in U12s.<\/p>\n

The very quick turnaround between matches ensured non-stop action.<\/p>\n

The younger teams, who weren’t playing for points, enjoyed 15-minutes games on the outer fields with friends and family cheering them on.<\/p>\n

The U12s, who were competing for a trophy, played 19-minute games on the main Wondai Oval in front of an enthusiastic crowd.<\/p>\n

The Nanango Stags had been dominant all day, clocking up big wins against Hervey Bay Green, Wallaroos and Burrum to finish on top of the points table.<\/strong><\/p>\n

They came up against Cherbourg in the final, who had also secured three wins – against Hervey Bay Red, Brothers and Wallaroos – but had finished three points behind Nanango on the ladder.<\/p>\n

Just one point behind was Murgon who missed out on a final spot by the narrowest of margins.<\/p>\n

Cherbourg was at a disadvantage going into the main game, having to front up again after only a short break following their 8-0 victory over Wallaroos.<\/p>\n

Nanango captain Saxton Hamson was first to score and then backed up a few minutes later for his second (his seventh try for the carnival).<\/p>\n

Jake Keating then scored to take the Stags out to a 12-0 lead before David Hopkins broke the ice for Cherbourg.<\/p>\n

But Keating then scored again to put the final result beyond doubt, a win to Nanango 16-4.<\/p>\n

The Player of the Final was Nanango’s Nick Birch.<\/p>\n
