There was something for everyone at the Nanango Show Society’s “Lifestyle Weekend” at the showgrounds … enough to tempt anyone interested in a country “tree change”.<\/p>\n

This is the third year that the Show Society has run the weekend, an expo originally targeted at small farms.<\/p>\n

A highlight on Saturday was the return of team penning to Nanango; 67 teams competed in the Open section and 38 in the juniors. There was also a wild card competition.<\/p>\n

In team penning, a group of three riders must cut out three beasts \u2013 marked with coloured ribbons \u2013 from a herd of 21 cattle and then pen them at the end of the yard.<\/p>\n

The fastest time recorded on the day was 41.03 seconds by the local team of Michael and Michelle Hunter and Greg Lee.<\/p>\n

While the team penning was kicking up dust in the ring, a few hundred metres away more sedate (and shorter) cattle were being led quietly around another ring for the\u00a0annual Queensland Dexter Breeds Show.<\/p>\n

The Grand Champion and Supreme Champion Bull of the show was “Hobbit Hill Mr Brandy” from the Collinthia Stud at Rockhampton, shown by the president of the Dexter Cattle Association of Australia, Norm Eriksen.<\/p>\n

Mr Eriksen brought down 14 head and four calves for the show.<\/p>\n

More than 70 nominations were received for the Dexter show, from all over Queensland and NSW.<\/p>\n

A few hundred yards away from the “beefy little milkers” , beasts of another shape were being led around an even smaller ring.<\/p>\n

The annual Queensland Alpaca “Colourbration Show” featured alpacas of all ages (and colours).<\/p>\n

Show convenor Doris Drew, from Nanango, said 138 animals had been entered in the show and 81 fleeces. The alpacas came from all over Queensland.<\/p>\n

The animals were judged on their conformation and the quality of their fleeces.<\/p>\n
