{"id":73429,"date":"2014-07-08T02:14:12","date_gmt":"2014-07-07T16:14:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/?p=73429"},"modified":"2020-08-27T12:12:56","modified_gmt":"2020-08-27T02:12:56","slug":"good-sports-launch-naidoc-week","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/2014\/07\/08\/good-sports-launch-naidoc-week\/","title":{"rendered":"Good Sports Launch NAIDOC Week"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_73432\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-73432\" style=\"width: 740px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/20140707cherbourg1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-73432\" title=\"20140707 Play The Ball\" src=\"http:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/20140707cherbourg1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"740\" height=\"460\" srcset=\"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/20140707cherbourg1.jpg 620w, https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/20140707cherbourg1-300x186.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 740px) 100vw, 740px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-73432\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ration Shed chairperson Sandra Morgan in the new rugby league room in the old Boys Dormitory<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>July 8, 2014<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Cherbourg&#8217;s NAIDOC celebrations were kicked off in a spectacular fashion with the official opening on Monday of the Ration Shed&#8217;s new\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/rationshed.com.au\/play-the-ball-the-story-of-sport-in-cherbourg\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Play The Ball<\/a><\/strong> exhibition.<\/p>\n<p>Two rooms in the old Boys Dormitory have been turned into a celebration of Cherbourg&#8217;s many sporting heroes.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s a boxing corner, \u00a0a wall dedicated to Cherbourg&#8217;s marching girls, a &#8220;Wall Of Fame&#8221; and a very special rugby league room filled with guernseys, photos and other memorabilia.<\/p>\n<p>A video showing rugby league players in action and many historic photos is playing in one corner with a soundtrack sung by Robert &#8220;Rocko&#8221; Langton.<\/p>\n<p>The exhibition was officially opened by Cecil Brown Snr, a Cherbourg league player from the 1950s.<\/p>\n<p>Also unveiled was a display celebrating the &#8220;Cherbourg Team Of The Century&#8221; selected in 2004 by Roy Fisher, Percy Iszlaub, Bill Oliver and Eric Law.<\/p>\n<p>The celebrations at the Ration Shed opening followed a reunion organised to mark the official opening of a new tombstone in Cherbourg Cemetery to commemorate one of Cherbourg&#8217;s greatest sporting heroes, Frank &#8220;Bigshot&#8221; Fisher.<\/p>\n<p>Frank was a spectacular rugby league player and also excelled in other sports, but did not achieve the recognition he deserved until after his death in 1980.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;He was a great man. He was a great footballer. He worked very hard to achieve good things in the community,&#8221; daughter Lillian Gray said.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>NAIDOC celebrations will continue today (Tuesday) with a Community Open Day at the Ration Shed Museum from 10:30am. There&#8217;ll also be a barbecue, a musical playground, indigenous art, fun activities for children, film screenings and much more.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>* * *<\/strong><\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_73482\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-73482\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/frankfisher.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-73482\" title=\"Frank &quot;Bigshot&quot; Fisher\" src=\"http:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/frankfisher.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/frankfisher.jpg 200w, https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/frankfisher-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/frankfisher-50x50.jpg 50w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-73482\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Frank &#8220;Bigshot&#8221; Fisher<br \/>(Photo: Vock Collection)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3><strong>Frank &#8220;Bigshot&#8221; Fisher (1905-1980)<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Outside Cherbourg (and rugby league circles), Bigshot Fisher is usually referred to as &#8220;Cathy Freeman&#8217;s grandfather&#8221; &#8230; but in the South Burnett, he&#8217;s a legend in his own right.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Racism &#8211; there is no nice way of saying it &#8211; stopped Frank from shining on the international rugby league stage, but he did get the opportunity (twice) to turn out for Wide Bay against Great Britain touring teams in the 1930s, where he made a huge impression.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, he was offered a contract in 1936 from an English rugby league club but the State Government refused his passport application.<\/p>\n<p>In 2004, Bigshot Fisher was named in the Cherbourg Team Of The Century, four years later he was named in the South Burnett Team Of The Century and the Wide Bay Team Of The Century.<\/p>\n<p>The ultimate accolade was his selection in the Indigenous Team Of The Century in 2008 alongside modern rugby league greats such as Eric Simms, Steve Renouf, Greg Inglis, Johnathan Thurston, Arthur Beetson and Cliff Lyons.<\/p>\n<p>Not bad for a man who was rarely allowed to play league at the level his talent deserved!<\/p>\n<p>Frank was also handy with a bat and ball.\u00a0 He once hit 105 runs in 32 minutes while playing cricket for Cherbourg against Goomeri &#8211; including 11 sixes and five fours.<\/p>\n<p>NB.
