Staff at the Kingaroy RSPCA are over the moon about their weekend “Get a Pet” promotion.<\/p>\n

RSPCA shelters across Queensland are overflowing with unwanted animals at present, and the RSPCA decided to hold a state-wide promotion in an effort to free up much-needed shelter space.<\/p>\n

With less than a week to prepare, Kingaroy RSPCA staff put together a fun weekend that included a jumping castle, face painting, a bake stall, lucky dips for children, $5 hydrobaths, a barbecue and “behind the scenes” guided tours of the shelter.<\/p>\n

But the biggest attraction were the deeply discounted adoption fees that offered savings of up to 75 per cent below normal rates.<\/p>\n

The result? Over the weekend the shelter found new homes for eight dogs, 12 cats and a rooster – an outcome that shelter manager Sally Charles said was “absolutely wonderful”.<\/p>\n

The first nine adoptions (three dogs and six cats) happened by lunch-time on Saturday.<\/p>\n

Another two adoptions took place on Saturday afternoon, and a further 10 on Sunday.<\/p>\n

This financial year the shelter has adopted out more than 500 animals, but the RSPCA still has hundreds of animals in need of new families.<\/p>\n
