The exhibition will be open to the public from July 8.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ahead of the exhibition, local journalist Marcus Priaulx reflects on Cherbourg&#8217;s proud history in the boxing ring:<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>* * *<\/strong><\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_70947\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-70947\" style=\"width: 740px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/20140616boxers1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-70947\" title=\"Queensland boxing champions 1957-58\" src=\"http:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/20140616boxers1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"740\" height=\"460\" srcset=\"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/20140616boxers1.jpg 620w, https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/20140616boxers1-300x186.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 740px) 100vw, 740px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-70947\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">1957-58 Queensland boxing champions, from left, Arthur &#8220;Bullet&#8221; Bradley (lightweight), Eddie Barney (Under 7 stone) and Jeffrey Dynevor (flyweight)\u00a0<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong><strong>by Marcus Priaulx*<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/strong><strong><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cherbourg.qld.gov.au\/PACE\/PaCE_home.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Barambah PaCE<\/a><\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Cherbourg boxers ruled the nation when their sport was probably the most popular in the country during the 1960s.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Jimmy Edwards, Adrian Blair and Jeffrey Dynevor went to the Empire (Commonwealth) Games as Australian Champions in 1962 and Dynevor came home with gold.<\/p>\n<p>Dynevor was the first Aborigine to win a gold medal in any sport at such a games, but former Australian professional champion Arthur \u201cBullet\u201d Bradley says Edwards was actually the best boxer to come out of the town.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe should\u2019ve fought (world welterweight professional champion) Emile Griffith and was one of Australia\u2019s best ever fighters,\u201d Bullet said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut he wouldn\u2019t train.\u00a0 He was an absolute freak.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>(Bantamweight) Dynevor and (Lightweight) Blair were noted hard trainers and did so under the eye of Bobby Barkle who accompanied them as national coach to Perth, along with Kingaroy Aboriginal boxer Eddie Barney.<\/p>\n<p>Blair also went to the 1964 Olympics where he won his first fight before losing to eventual Russian silver medallist, Velikton Barannikov.<\/p>\n<p>Along with Dynevor he would travel to Kingaroy to train at the old council chambers behind the Carrollee Hotel.<\/p>\n<p>It was a small gym with a ring in the middle and was always packed to capacity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Cherbourg boys would drive along the old forestry road from Wondai to train and spar,\u201d Bullet said.<\/p>\n<p>Kingaroy businesses would sponsor their trips away as boxing \u201cwas the number 1 sport in those days\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cherbourg tournaments, held in the Kingaroy town hall, would always be full and men would \u201cbelt bondship into each other and have a drink afterwards&#8221;.<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_45175\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-45175\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/20130922boxing5.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-45175\" title=\"20130922 Kingaroy Fight Afternoon\" src=\"http:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/20130922boxing5.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"325\" srcset=\"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/20130922boxing5.jpg 300w, https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/20130922boxing5-277x300.jpg 277w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-45175\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Murgon boxer Steve Simpson gets some advice in his corner from South Burnett boxing legend, former lightweight champion Arthur (Bullet) Bradley before a Kingaroy bout last year (Photo: Denise Keelan)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThere was a competitive spirit but terrific sportsmanship,\u201d Bullet, who admittedly felt scared before facing a Cherbourg fighter, said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou could hardly hit them in the first round they were that quick,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe really admired them and they were happy-go-lucky blokes; tough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To this day Bullet, who has seen thousands of fights, reckons the one of the best ever was between Jimmy Edwards and Adrian Blair.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was at Cherbourg,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe crowd just erupted.
