The National PigGas Extension Program will be holding a workshop in Kingaroy on July 1 to explain the Federal Government’s Carbon Farming Initiative and opportunities for pig producers.<\/p>\n

The workshop will also provide hands-on training on how to use the Pork Industry Greenhouse Gas Calculator (PigGas) to calculate on-farm greenhouse gas emissions.<\/p>\n

PigGas uses farm data such as diets, feed intakes and pig growth, waste treatment systems, energy use, transport and pig sales data.<\/p>\n

There are opportunities to trade saved emissions as Australian Carbon Credit Units.<\/p>\n

Also some piggeries may be able to generate on-site energy to power their piggeries by capturing and burning methane from covered effluent ponds.<\/p>\n

PigGas can highlight problem areas such as inefficiencies in feed utilisation and wastage and possible changes in waste treatment and reuse systems.<\/p>\n

Producers must have a working knowledge of using Microsoft Excel to attend the workshop, and should bring along their own laptop computer with Excel 2010 or 2013 software installed.<\/p>\n

The workshop is part of the National PigGas Extension Program and is funded by Ian Kruger Consulting, the Federal Government and Australian Pork Limited.<\/p>\n

The workshop is free of charge and limited to 20 places. Registration is essential.<\/p>\n
