Whitney Horwood … $1000 bursary from the National Council of Women Of Queensland\u00a0<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Nanango Year 12 student Whitney Horwood has been awarded a $1000 bursary to help her fulfil her dream of becoming a chef.<\/p>\n

Whitney, 17, received the cheque at a special ceremony organised in Brisbane last month by the National Council of Women of Queensland Inc (NCWQ).<\/p>\n

She was one of just 20 women across Queensland to receive a NCWQ bursary,<\/p>\n

Whitney told southburnett.com.au<\/strong> today that a teacher at Nanango State High School had told her about the bursary opportunity.<\/p>\n

She put in her application in April, and heard she had been successful just a few weeks later.<\/p>\n

NCWQ is an umbrella organisation which represents more than 50 affiliated associations and individuals with a broad aim to promote the interests of women. It is non-party political, non-sectarian and not-for-profit.<\/p>\n

Whitney received the Nigel Johnson Bursary for a female full-time student in the first year of a cooking\/chef apprenticeship.<\/p>\n

The bursary is sponsored by the sister and brother-in-law of Nigel Johnson as a family tribute in his memory. Nigel was a passionate chef who died of an hereditary kidney disease at age 37.<\/p>\n

Whitney is part-way through a school-based traineeship based at Karinya aged care home in Nanango.<\/p>\n

On training days she helps prepare the menus, cooks breakfast for the residents, and prepares the main course and dessert.<\/p>\n

In her spare time she usually works serving soup and making sandwiches for the residents.<\/p>\n
