The hiring of Jarmmarmia Hooper at Wondai P-9 State School has lightened the load for principal Ruth Miller.<\/p>\n

Jarmmarmia is an indigenous support worker and has linked closely with families on Tuesdays and Thursdays for the past 10 weeks.<\/p>\n

Ruth said her Aboriginal parents had asked for somebody like Jarmmarmia to be part of her staff.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was trying to be a principal and a parent liaison officer and it wasn\u2019t working that well,\u201d Ruth said.<\/p>\n

\u201cJarmmarmia arrived and we had a parent the other day say \u2018we\u2019re so lucky to have her\u2019.”<\/p>\n

Parents are able to relate well with the Wynnum State High School graduate whose family is from Cherbourg.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Jarmmarmia starts the day by looking at the roll to see which students are absent.<\/p>\n

She then contacts parents to see if there\u2019s an issue.<\/p>\n

\u201cNine out of 10 times there\u2019s a reason why the children aren\u2019t here,\u201d Jarmmarmia said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe don\u2019t want parents to feel pressured and feel we\u2019re always chasing them. Having an indigenous person builds trust.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jarmmarmia believes strongly in the need for children to show for school every day and holds a Diploma in Indigenous Community Services.<\/p>\n

She began her working life in youth services before veering into schools.<\/p>\n

\u201cI love working with the children, the positive feedback, the progress of the students …\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s nice to see parents with a smile on their face and to have them know we\u2019re glad they\u2019re a part of our school.<\/p>\n

\u201cI work to make them feel comfortable about the school and work out any issues.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt makes a difference to themselves and their families when their children are positively engaged in learning.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s good for everybody\u2019s future.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ruth said Jarmmarmia had filled a gap within her staffing.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u2019s completed our team,\u201d Ruth said.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u2019s a support for our parents and students and we\u2019re building on the amount of families Jarmmarmia\u2019s able to work with.<\/p>\n
