Kingaroy State High School students have won the Toowoomba Regional round of Bond University’s 2014 High School Mooting Competition.<\/p>\n

“Mooting” is the closest thing to the courtroom that students interested in the law can experience.<\/p>\n

They must argue a legal issue or problem against an opposing counsel and before a judge.<\/p>\n

KSHS students Jenna Irwin, Sam Gangemi and Zoe Basham, along with three members of a support research team, worked over the past three months to prepare their submissions and appearance in the first round of the competition at the Toowoomba Courts.<\/p>\n

The students were given an appellant\u2019s case to prepare, and spent many hours researching, writing, practising and being prepped for the judge\u2019s questions.<\/p>\n

Jenna, as Senior Counsel, and Sam, as Junior Counsel, presented fluent submissions to the judge and answered questions with poise and a clear depth of knowledge.<\/p>\n

The judge was impressed with Sam\u2019s cool response to difficult questions and he was awarded an Advocacy Merit Award.<\/p>\n

Past student Carl Tessmann, who also won the Regional final and was awarded the Best Advocate Award in 2007, has been an invaluable support to the team during their long preparations.<\/p>\n

The team will now progress to the National Finals which will be held at Bond University on August 2.<\/p>\n

“We are very excited to be going to the finals but now the hard work begins again!” Jenna and Sam said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
