clean sweep of the 2014 President&#8217;s Cup competitions<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>May 19, 2014<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>By Martin Stern<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.footballsouthburnett.com.au\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Football South Burnett<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The 2014 President&#8217;s Cup was played in Kingaroy on Saturday afternoon, and the Nanango Panthers made a clean sweep of it.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The President&#8217;s Cup is a mid-season competition where the top two teams after two rounds (ie. after each team has played each other twice) play against one other.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a special event, and the weekly Evolution Solar South Burnett Football League competition took a one-week holiday to accommodate it.<\/p>\n<p>The Cup always provides a great day of football, and a very good crowd turned out at Tom Alford Oval to watch the region&#8217;s current top squads battle it out.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>* * *<\/strong><\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_68147\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-68147\" style=\"width: 740px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/20140519-panthers-2div.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-68147\" title=\"20140519 Panthers 2nd Division\" src=\"http:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/20140519-panthers-2div.jpg\" alt=\"Panthers 2nd Division\" width=\"740\" height=\"460\" srcset=\"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/20140519-panthers-2div.jpg 620w, https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/20140519-panthers-2div-300x186.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 740px) 100vw, 740px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-68147\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Panthers&#8217; captain Trevor Holt is handed the 2nd Division trophy by Football South Burnett CA president Cameron Sterling\u00a0(Photo: Sarah Vanderkolk)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>The first match of the afternoon was the Second Division clash, with Barambah up against Nanango. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Barambah got off to a good start when Brendan Kelly put them ahead in the 5th minute, but were caught napping in the 18th minute when Damien Corson latched on to a through ball to equalise.<\/p>\n<p>Then in the 26th minute, David Ashby found some space out wide and ran in with only the keeper to beat to give Nanango a 2-1 lead.<\/p>\n<p>But in the 34th minute &#8211; Women&#8217;s Division captain Cassie Kelly accepts the winner&#8217;s trophy from\u00a0Football South Burnett CA president Cameron Sterling<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>The Women\u2019s Division match between Nanango and Wests was a bit of an arm wrestle.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>But it was Nanango that took one of the rare opportunities in the game when Cassie Evans scored from a Wests&#8217; goalmouth mistake in the 11th minute.<\/p>\n<p>As things turned out, this was the only real opportunity Nanango had to score in a game that turned out to be one of the most evenly matched of the day.<\/p>\n<p>Neither side stamped their authority on this game, and neither team settled down to play smart football.<\/p>\n<p>All the same, both sides really put their hearts into it and it proved an exciting &#8211; First Division captain Damien Walters accepts the trophy from Steve Tilley from competition sponsors Evolution Solar<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Nanango were favoured to win the First Division match against Barambah.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>But Barambah have been a thorn in Nanango\u2019s side over the past couple of years and if anyone was going to pull off a surprise win against the Panthers, it was them.<\/p>\n<p>Both sides played good attacking football.<\/p>\n<p>Nanango went ahead in the 9th minute through a screamer from Kieran Askin.<\/p>\n<p>Both teams had a few chances to score in the first half but on a whole it was a battle in the midfield.<\/p>\n<p>Seven minutes into the second half Nanango struck again &#8211;
