Levers Road at Tablelands may re-open by the end of the year.<\/p>\n

A community consultation meeting held last night at Tablelands Hall decided the best way to re-open the road would be to rebuild a section of it north of the existing road.<\/p>\n

The cost of the rebuild is expected to be about $1.2 million and would involve some land resumptions from an adjoining property.<\/p>\n

But this is roughly one quarter the cost of replacing the existing section, which is estimated to be $4.5 million.<\/p>\n

Levers Road has been closed since June last year after a catastrophic landslip left Council engineers concerned that a complete road collapse was imminent.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Traffic has been diverted around the landslip ever since, forcing drivers to travel several extra kilometres.<\/p>\n

At a public meeting last December, local residents were told there were three options to solve the problem: a “like for like” replacement, reworking the road on a new alignment, or leaving the road permanently closed.<\/p>\n

However since a “like for like” replacement would cost almost 10 per cent of the Council’s annual budget, they were told this option was very unlikely.<\/p>\n

The meeting then voted for Council to further investigate the remaining two options.<\/p>\n

The results were presented to last night’s meeting, which was attended by 14 residents, Council officers and Division 5 Cr Kathy Duff.<\/p>\n

Cr Duff, who chaired the meeting, told southburnett.com.au<\/strong> today Council would seek money for the project from the Queensland Reconstruction Authority.<\/p>\n

Tenders are expected to be called in September and if all goes well, she’s hopeful the road will re-open by the end of the year.<\/p>\n
