South Burnett Saints players were selected in the Country side – and wore old Kingaroy Bulldogs jerseys to mark the fact the game was being played for the first time in the South Burnett – but there were also Saints in the City side after their numbers fell short on the day<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Country convincingly defeated City in the annual AFL Darling Downs City v Country match played before a good-size crowd at Lyle Vidler Oval in Kingaroy on Saturday.<\/p>\n

Country ran out 24.18 (162) to 4.10 (34) against an under-manned City team in the one-sided encounter.<\/p>\n

Goondiwindi’s Jeremy Leahy and Warwick’s Brendan Iles tore their City opponents apart, with Leahy awarded the Chris Guice Medal as best on ground.<\/p>\n

The teams were playing for the Tom North Shield, named after a long-time Goondiwindi Hawks\u00a0volunteer, player, coach and administrator.<\/p>\n

North flew up from Victoria to present the shield himself.<\/p>\n

AFL Darling Downs will now select a squad of 23 to take on AFL Northern Rivers in June.<\/p>\n

Also played on the day was a women’s AFL match between rep sides Darling Downs and Wide Bay.<\/strong><\/p>\n

In another lopsided affair, Darling Downs ran out winners 26.19 (175) to 0.1 (1).<\/p>\n

Isabelle Baldock was judged best on ground for her tireless efforts.<\/p>\n

AFL Queensland will select players from this game for a Female All-Stars game on June 8 from where a Queensland women’s side will be selected to take on Tasmania later in the year.<\/p>\n
