The decision by Kingaroy Show organisers the re-launch their annual pork competition as the\u00a0Queensland Pork and Bacon Carcase Classic – and to lift prize money – has paid dividends with a record 53 nominations being received.<\/p>\n

The entries were slaughtered at Swickers in Kingaroy yesterday, went into the chiller overnight and were judged this morning.<\/p>\n

Swickers Senior Standards Inspector Damien Obst said the carcases were judged in two classes: Pork (50kg-65kg) and Bacon (65.1kg-80kg).<\/p>\n

He selected a winner in each class and an overall winner.<\/p>\n

Farmers elected the class to enter. Points were deducted if the carcase was under or over-weight (hot standard carcase weight).<\/p>\n

Also measured were body length, fat depth and eye muscle area.<\/p>\n

Mr Obst said the competition aimed to promote the optimum carcase for consumers.<\/p>\n

Entries came from north of Murgon to Warra and out to Proston.<\/p>\n

Mr Obst said in past years the pork competition had attracted as few as a eight entries so this year’s competition had been a huge improvement.<\/p>\n

A flitch from each carcase will be put on display at the Kingaroy Show.<\/p>\n
