{"id":6589,"date":"2012-07-16T20:18:51","date_gmt":"2012-07-16T10:18:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/?p=6589"},"modified":"2021-02-01T10:18:26","modified_gmt":"2021-02-01T00:18:26","slug":"visitors-trek-from-afar-for-camels","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/2012\/07\/16\/visitors-trek-from-afar-for-camels\/","title":{"rendered":"Camel Visitors Trek From Afar"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_6617\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6617\" style=\"width: 740px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/20120716camels1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-6617\" title=\"20120716 Camel Field Day\" src=\"http:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/20120716camels1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"740\" height=\"460\" srcset=\"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/20120716camels1.jpg 620w, https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/20120716camels1-300x186.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 740px) 100vw, 740px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6617\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Robyn Sommerville from Southern Cross Camels with &#8220;Chinook&#8221;, a 28-year-old male camel<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>July 16, 2012<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>By Pam Duggan<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Queensland&#8217;s first ever Camel Field Day is being hailed a huge success by organisers after about 400 people turned up to enjoy the event held at Bindanoon camel farm at Blackbutt on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>Visitors came from all over the country to attend the field day, with guests even flying in from North Africa and the Middle East to learn more about the use of camels in Australia.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The day was a huge success,&#8221; said Lionel Keegan, from Southern Cross Camels.<\/p>\n<p>Guest speakers took to the stage to talk about the the benefits of camel tourism, milk and by-products, training and trekking, \u00a0as well as sharing the latest in camel research.<\/p>\n<p>The field day was co-hosted by<strong> Camel Milk Australia<\/strong>, the <strong>Australian Camel Industry Association<\/strong>, <strong>Meramist Pty Ltd<\/strong>, the <strong>University of Queensland<\/strong>, <strong>Southern Cross Camels<\/strong> and the <strong>Department of Agriculture, Fisheries &amp; Forestry.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It included camel milking and handling demonstrations as well as camel rides and the promotion and sale of camel cosmetics.<\/p>\n<p>Catering &#8211; which included camel burgers and camel sausages &#8211; was provided by the Blackbutt Tourism and Heritage\u00a0Association.<\/p>\n<p>Visitors were provided with information on various aspects of camel farming, including diet, \u00a0establishing routines, and how grazing camels can help to control woody weeds.<\/p>\n<p>According to\u00a0 <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.camelmilkaustralia.com.au\/index.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Camel Milk Australia<\/a><\/strong>, camels can also transfer a gut microbe to cattle via mutual water sources. This microbe can stimulate\u00a0the cow&#8217;s rumen, encouraging them to eat more dry vegetation, and potentially adding about 10 per cent in weight during drought conditions.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We were thrilled with the day,&#8221; said Lauren Brisbane, from the Australian Camel Industry\u00a0Association.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was the first camel field day to have been held in Queensland and we had a great response.
