{"id":65534,"date":"2014-04-29T15:27:41","date_gmt":"2014-04-29T05:27:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/?p=65534"},"modified":"2020-12-04T11:12:15","modified_gmt":"2020-12-04T01:12:15","slug":"hunt-for-exotic-pest-turtles","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/2014\/04\/29\/hunt-for-exotic-pest-turtles\/","title":{"rendered":"Hunt For Exotic Pest Turtles"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_65536\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-65536\" style=\"width: 740px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/20140429turtle1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-65536\" title=\"20140429 Chinese turtle\" src=\"http:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/20140429turtle1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"740\" height=\"460\" srcset=\"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/20140429turtle1.jpg 620w, https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/20140429turtle1-300x186.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 740px) 100vw, 740px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-65536\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Chinese stripe-necked turtle also features yellow stripes on its shell\u00a0(Photo: Col Limpus)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>April 29, 2014<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Biosecurity Queensland and Toowoomba Regional Council have begun a hunt for exotic pest turtles following the recent discovery of Australia\u2019s first Chinese stripe-necked turtle.<\/p>\n<p>The turtle was suspected of being dumped in Toowoomba\u2019s Bicentennial Waterbird Habitat.<\/p>\n<p>Agriculture Minister John McVeigh said a Chinese stripe-necked turtle plus nine non-native turtles were recently found during a recent fauna assessment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBiosecurity Queensland and the Toowoomba Regional Council will today begin monitoring the ponds to see if any more pest turtles are present,\u201d Mr McVeigh said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s the first time a Chinese stripe-necked turtle has been found in Australia, and we need to ensure it doesn\u2019t have an opportunity to breed and spread.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis turtle is a Class 1 pest because it can prey on native animals, compete with them for space in the wild, and may also carry diseases that can spread to native animals.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s illegal to keep exotic animals such as this turtle in Queensland without a permit. For someone to have dumped one in our waterways is very irresponsible.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Toowoomba Regional Council Mayor Paul Antonio said it was likely the turtle was an unwanted pet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAny dumping of exotic pets into local reserves or parks poses a major threat to Australian fauna. People need to think about the repercussions of their actions,\u201d Cr Antonio said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCouncil is working with Biosecurity Queensland to check if any other turtles have been dumped.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Turtle experts from the Department of Environment and Heritage Protection will assist with the monitoring to identify native turtles.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Members of the public should report any knowledge or sightings of exotic turtles to Biosecurity Queensland on 13-25-23.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>* * *<\/strong><\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_65535\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-65535\" style=\"width: 740px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/20140429turtle2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-65535\" title=\"20140429 Chinese turtle\" src=\"http:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/20140429turtle2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"740\" height=\"460\" srcset=\"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/20140429turtle2.jpg 620w, https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/20140429turtle2-300x186.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 740px) 100vw, 740px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-65535\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Chinese stripe-necked turtle pulls its head straight back into its shell\u00a0(Photo: Col Limpus)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><em>The Chinese stripe-necked turtle (Mauremys sinensis) is native to China, Vietnam and Korea.\u00a0<\/em><em>It is a potential invasive freshwater turtle species that grows up to 24cm long.\u00a0<\/em><em>The shell is reddish-brown to black, with yellow stripes, the underside of the shell is yellow.\u00a0<\/em><em>The Chinese stripe-necked turtle has a narrow head and cream-coloured jaws and chin.\u00a0<\/em><em>Female Chinese stripe-necked turtles are larger than males.\u00a0<\/em><em>Unlike native turtles, which tuck their heads in on the side, the Chinese stripe-necked turtle retracts its head straight back into the shell.
