April 23, 2014<\/strong><\/p>\n

Representative AFL football will be coming to Kingaroy on May 10, when Lyle Vidler Oval hosts AFL Darling Downs’ annual City v Country match.<\/p>\n

The teams will be playing for the Tom North Shield, currently held by Country.<\/p>\n

The Country side will be made up of players from the South Burnett, Dalby, Chinchilla, Warwick, Highfields, Goondiwindi and Lockyer Valley and will be wearing the old “Kingaroy Bulldogs” heritage jumpers on the day in recognition of representative footy coming to Kingaroy for the first time.<\/p>\n

The jumpers will be auctioned after the match as a fundraiser for the South Burnett Saints.<\/p>\n

The City team will be made up of players from Coolaroo, University, South Toowoomba and the Toowoomba Tigers,<\/p>\n

The game will get underway at 4:00pm.<\/p>\n

Earlier in the day Darling Downs v Wide Bay rep matches will be played in U14s, U16s and Women\u2019s divisions.<\/p>\n

The women’s game, which kicks off at 2:15pm will feature players from all six of the Darling Downs competition’s women’s teams.<\/p>\n

AFL Darling Downs president Andrew Foley said the game would be “a step in the right direction” to establish female footy in the South Burnett.<\/p>\n

“(The Saints) are a relatively new club and to hold this type of game will be great not only for the club but wider community to know that Australian Rules is not just a male sport,” he said.<\/p>\n
