It wasn’t Clean Up Australia Day but that didn’t matter to the team of volunteers – all wearing bright orange safety vests – who were scouring the D’Aguilar Highway in Nanango this morning.<\/p>\n

The Nanango Tourism and Development Association (NaTDA) has “adopted” a stretch of the highway on the outskirts of town, from the Tarong turn-off to Brown Street.<\/p>\n

This is the third time they have patrolled the stretch since July last year, removing all the bits and pieces of rubbish and litter that seem to end up strewn alongside our highways.<\/p>\n

The largest object removed this morning was a wheel, but there were also countless cans, bottles,\u00a0 and pieces of paper.<\/p>\n

NaTDA president Gloria Kirkness said the group had decided to “Adopt A Spot” as promoted by Keep Australia Beautiful.<\/p>\n

The group received safety vests, gloves and pickers from Keep Australia Beautiful to assist them in their task.<\/p>\n

And if they manage to clean their stretch of road four times in 12 months, a sign will be erected on the highway alerting motorists to the fact that NaTDA has “adopted” it.<\/p>\n

“We hope this will be a great deterrent to people throwing things out,” she said.<\/p>\n

She said the group was keen for other volunteers to also get involved.<\/p>\n
