Almost nine in every 10 Queensland dairy farmers lack confidence in the future of the industry, the majority have negative cashflow, and farmgate milk prices will need to rise by at least 12 cents per litre before confidence can be renewed and fresh milk supplies are restored for Queensland consumers. <\/p>\n

These were the key findings of a survey in January by the Queensland Dairyfarmers\u2019 Organisation of the State\u2019s dairy farmers.<\/p>\n

The QDO distributed its survey to the State\u2019s 496 dairy farmers (the total number has decreased by 100 since the supermarket milk war began) and received a response rate of 46 per cent. <\/p>\n

QDO president Brian Tessmann said the survey was confirmation of the ongoing impacts and confidence crisis hitting the Queensland industry, which had been rocked in recent years by floods, cyclones, the milk price war, and now severe drought. <\/p>\n

\u201cOf those surveyed, an alarming 87 per cent said they were uncertain or not confident in the future of the northern industry, and 79 per cent were either uncertain or not confident in their own dairying business,\u201d Mr Tessmann said. <\/p>\n

He said that with drought conditions now tightening on the State\u2019s dairying regions, the shortfall of milk that followed the supermarket milk price war and low farm gate milk prices had accelerated. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt has been estimated that the shortfall of Queensland milk is about 100 million litres or 20 per cent,” he said. <\/p>\n

“The ludicrous situation is that milk is being freighted at a higher cost to fill the gap, at a cost more than local farmers are being paid. Our market is in total failure.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe supermarkets could fix the problem with the stroke of a pen but the reality is that the industry is facing its third natural disaster \u2013 drought \u2013 since the price war began and the supermarkets are still refusing to stop the milk price war. <\/p>\n

“Given the gross failure this is causing the milk supply chain, we need the Federal Government to act immediately. <\/p>\n

“This means a Mandatory Code of Conduct must be implemented immediately, beyond any lengthy reviews of legislation that they have flagged. Otherwise, the Queensland milk shortage will get worse, and a vital Queensland industry will continue to deteriorate, as more and more farmers sell up.\u201d <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
