Plans to erect a six foot tall white granite statue of a World War I veteran in Kingaroy for next year’s Gallipoli centenary have moved forward with the unveiling of a model of the statue.<\/p>\n

Craig Jessen, from K.C. Monuments in Toowoomba, brought a scale model of the statue over to Kingaroy yesterday for the Kingaroy-Memerambi RSL Sub-Branch to inspect.<\/p>\n

The model, prepared by Craig and his cousin Karlee Rawling, took 18 hours to make and is an exact replica of the clay model which will be used as a template for the full-scale figure.<\/p>\n

Craig said he had carefully researched all the World War I uniform details to make the figure as accurate as possible.<\/p>\n

The 1.5 tonne statue will be cut from a block of granite and lifted into place by a crane near the catafalque in Memorial Park.<\/p>\n

Sub-Branch president Don Davey said the plan was for it to be unveiled on Anzac Day next year, after more work was done on paving around the site.<\/p>\n

It would be mounted at the same height as the current memorial walls in the park.<\/p>\n

The whole centenary project is expected to cost about $30,000.<\/p>\n

Mr Davey said the Sub-Branch had received a grant of $4000 \u00a0from the Federal Government towards the cost however any donations from the public or local companies “would be most welcome”.<\/p>\n
