The South Burnett Regional Council will soon install closed circuit video cameras in 10 of the region’s public parks in a bid to combat vandalism.<\/p>\n

SBRC General Manager of Planning, Community and Environment Stan Taylor confirmed today council had placed orders for 10 CCTV camera systems.<\/p>\n

He said Council hoped to have the new cameras installed and operational before Anzac Day.<\/p>\n

The move comes in response to vandalism at Kingaroy’s Memorial Park, Nanango’s Pioneer Park and Kingaroy’s Apex Park over the past five months which caused tens of thousands of dollars damage to the Kingaroy War Memorial in Memorial Park, and to fixtures in the other two parks.<\/p>\n

In January, Kingaroy-Memerambi RSL Sub-Branch president Don Davey called on the Council to install surveillance cameras in Memorial Park after the Kingaroy War Memorial was desecrated by vandals for the second time in two months.<\/p>\n

At that time, SBRC Deputy Mayor Cr Keith Campbell told Mr Davey the Council would look at the idea.<\/p>\n

Today Mr Taylor said the new cameras would initially be installed at known “hot spots” around the region.<\/p>\n

However they could be relocated at short notice in future if other hot spots emerged.<\/p>\n

Mayor Wayne Kratzmann has repeatedly called for the public to develop a zero-tolerance approach to vandalism, saying the problem winds up costing ratepayers large amounts of money that could be better spent elsewhere.<\/p>\n
