Kingaroy’s Tom Alford Oval came alive at the weekend with 42 football teams from across Queensland in town for the Evolution Solar South Burnett Football Sevens Carnival.<\/p>\n

Marquees were dotted along the sidelines of the multiple playing fields while players and spectators mingled in the sunshine.<\/p>\n

Football South Burnett president Mick North told southburnett.com.au<\/strong> he was more than happy with the turnout and said the carnival “just seems to keep on getting bigger every year”.<\/p>\n

Local teams came up against the best from the Sunshine Coast, Bundaberg, Chinchilla and Roma but unfortunately didn’t come away with the major cash prizes.<\/p>\n

In the open men’s competition, Merry Man – which consisted of local players and Kingaroy ex-pats – finished undefeated on top of Pool A and earned a spot in the final by defeating Caloundra White 2-0 in the semi.<\/p>\n

They came up against Kawana, who had also finished undefeated on top of Pool B.<\/p>\n

In a sometimes volatile final, in which referee Sitha Mead was forced to issue three yellow cards, Kawana finished on top 2-0.<\/p>\n

Hervey Bay won their way into the Over 35s final after a tense penalty shootout over Fossils. Their form continued in the next game, defeating Alloway in the final on another penalty shootout.<\/p>\n

In the women’s competition, it looked likely that a South Burnett team could take the prize when Wests women’s team finished second in Pool A, behind Hervey Bay, and Nanango women’s team finished second in Pool B, behind Alloway.<\/p>\n

But it was not to be. The Panthers finished second runner-up.<\/p>\n

Wests went through to the final, but despite a valiant effort, went down 2-0 to Hervey Bay.<\/p>\n

This is the 32nd year that the seven-a-side carnival has been held in Kingaroy and the influx of players and supporters always provides a welcome economic boost to the region.<\/p>\n
