The South Burnett Regional Council will reel in capital spending on roadworks in next year’s Budget and refocus its efforts on road maintenance work instead.<\/p>\n

Mayor Wayne Kratzmann said today that planning for the 2014-15 Budget will begin this month.<\/p>\n

He is now holding weekly meetings with Deputy Mayor Cr Keith Campbell and SBRC Finance Director Gary Wall to begin defining the key issues councillors will focus on in Budget deliberations.<\/p>\n

He foreshadowed one of these would be a change of focus from capital works – that is, permanent improvements to local roads – in favour of maintenance.<\/p>\n

The Mayor said the 2011 and 2013 floods had highlighted that some parts of the Shire’s road network needed partial or complete rebuilding to withstand future flood events.<\/p>\n

These sections had required significant capital investment to bring them up to scratch.<\/p>\n

Works had ranged from floodways and causeways through to full bridge replacements, road realignments and – in the case of the Wooroolin Wetlands – the construction of an overflow channel.<\/p>\n

But now that most hot spots had been attended to, he wanted to change the SBRC’s priorities away from improvements to put a greater focus on maintenance.<\/p>\n

While this would mean fewer significant road upgrades next financial year, many residents – particularly those serviced by unsealed roads – would see more frequent grading than has been the case since Council amalgamations six years ago.<\/p>\n

“Residents in the rural parts of the Shire have let us know that they don’t expect a super highway past their front gate – they just want a safe road they can drive on without damaging their vehicles,” the Mayor said.<\/p>\n

“And if we don’t tie down our road crews with capital works projects, we can cover a lot more ground much faster for the same dollars.”<\/p>\n

The Mayor said expenditure on roads was the biggest part of the Council’s annual outlays.<\/p>\n

The unexpected loss of $1.4 million in State and federal road grants in November 2012 had impacted this heavily.<\/p>\n

But he was determined to get the best value for ratepayers from whatever funding was available, as well as continue agitating for the restoration of adequate road funding for the region.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
