Six dogs have had a reprieve after South Burnett councillors voted at their meeting on Wednesday to allow their owners to keep an extra animal.<\/p>\n

Council staff found the six residents were breaching council by-laws by keeping three dogs, one more than permitted.<\/p>\n

However, after a short discussion, councillors voted to allow the owners to keep the extra dogs, providing they keep the animals registered and neighbours don’t complain.<\/p>\n

Environment portfolio chair Cr Kathy Duff told Wednesday’s SBRC meeting the extra dogs had been detected when Council officers performed routine checks recently.<\/p>\n

“In some cases these people have moved off farms into town and brought their dogs with them,” she said.<\/p>\n

The six property owners were located at Murgon, Kumbia, Kingaroy and Wondai.<\/p>\n

* * *<\/center>The SBRC approved two small sub-divisions at this month’s meeting.<\/strong><\/p>\n

One was a proposal to split a 4ha lot at 276 Birt Road into two lots – one of 2.4ha and the other of 1.6ha.<\/p>\n

This proposal came before Council because the land is in a Rural Zone, and under the Kingaroy Shire IPA Planning Scheme rural lots generally need to be 200ha or greater.<\/p>\n

However, Councillors approved the sub-division because the lots were located across the road from an existing bed and breakfast operation and there was a heavily vegetated natural escarpment along the eastern boundary of the lot which provided a natural buffer from existing agricultural land on a neighbouring property.<\/p>\n

Cr Keith Campbell noted that the former Kingaroy Shire Council had approved a number of rural residential blocks nearby, so the application would be in keeping with the area’s character.<\/p>\n

Other councillors agreed.<\/p>\n

The second proposal was to split a 7.3ha lot at 61 Tessmann’s Road into three lots – one of 2900sq m, another of 4005sq m, and the third of 6.63ha.<\/p>\n

This proposal came before Council because the lots wouldn’t be connected to the reticulated sewerage system, so any houses built on them in future would require on-site sewerage effluent disposal systems.<\/p>\n

Councillors were told the reason for this was that the location of the lots made it impractical to install sewerage connections, but because of the small scale of the proposal, officers didn’t feel this would cause any adverse effects.<\/p>\n

The development was approved.<\/p>\n

* * *<\/center>Council will spend $284,909 to replace two 22.5 tonne GVM 6×4 trucks in its fleet.<\/strong><\/p>\n

On Wednesday the Council accepted a tender to purchase two Mitsubishi trucks at a cost of $142,954.50 each.<\/p>\n

* * *<\/center>Council has short-listed three companies to submit proposals for the design and construction of a water treatment plant upgrade at Gordonbrook Dam.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The dam is the main water source for Kingaroy and achieving good water quality has proven troublesome over the years.<\/p>\n

The Council hopes the upgrade will lead to improved water quality.<\/p>\n

* * *<\/center>Council has added four local quarries to its Preferred Supplier list for sourcing sand and gravel.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The companies are Murgon Sand and Gravel, Yarraman Quarry, South Burnett Quarries and Boral.<\/p>\n

* * *<\/center>A proposal to employ a Community & Customer Service Manager on contract has been deferred.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Councillors voted to lay the position on the table pending receipt of further information.<\/p>\n

* * *<\/center>The South Burnett Regional Council’s next general meeting will be held a day earlier than planned.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Councillors voted to hold the meeting on Tuesday, February 18, rather than Wednesday, February 19, because of the pressure of other commitments that day.<\/p>\n

Meetings will resume their normal schedule of being held on the third Wednesday of the month in March.<\/p>\n

The opening hours for the Council pound and the RSPCA\u2019s Kingaroy Animal Shelter will be changing from February 1.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The facilities will now be open from 10:00am to 5:00pm seven days a week. This change has been made to better serve the community after reviewing when the public most often used the facilities.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
