December 9, 2013<\/strong><\/p>\n

Kumbia QCWA\u2019s recent International Day was a combination of Christmas craft in the morning followed by lunch and a speaker.<\/p>\n

Turkey being our country of study influenced the choice of foods for lunch, with some non-Turkish options for the less adventurous.<\/p>\n

We considered a Christmas craft to be appropriate as the town of Patara, now in Turkey but formerly Greek, was the birthplace of St Nicholas who later evolved into the legend of Santa Claus.<\/p>\n

There was an extensive display of Turkish souvenirs and items relevant to the Turkish culture.<\/p>\n

The talk given by Branch International Officer Catherine Woodham took the audience on an interesting journey through Turkish culture and religion, to a puppet theatre, over rugs and into mosques.<\/p>\n

Catherine and Branch President Marian Mudra had the pleasure of visiting the Kumbia School to present the 1st<\/sup> prize won by Keira Johnston for her colouring in the State Finals of the ANZ sponsored international work by school children.<\/p>\n

We hope Keira\u2019s success inspires an even greater participation by the pupils of Kumbia School in next year\u2019s competition, which will focus on Vietnam.<\/p>\n

Members of the branch held a craft stall at the Kumbia Christmas Carnival and gave a balloon to each child.<\/p>\n

We have completed the \u00a0two patchwork quilts which will be the major prize in a raffle we are organising to help raise funds for the Kingaroy General Hospital to purchase a bladder scanner. We are hoping to enlist the help of other service clubs and interested groups to sell as many tickets as we can as this is a worthy cause and will benefit many in our community.\u00a0\u00a0 Anyone wishing to help either as an individual or a group please contact Marian on (07) 4164-5578 or Val on (07) 4164-4108.<\/p>\n

Our members enjoyed a time of friendship and fun over a shared Christmas lunch after our December meeting at which we contributed to a donation to the school chaplaincy fund.<\/p>\n
