Students at St Mary’s Catholic College<\/strong> in Kingaroy have answered a call for “warm food for winter” by donating boxloads of foodstuffs this week to Centacare South Burnett.<\/p>\n

Teacher Martin Perrett<\/strong> organised the two-week appeal.<\/p>\n

“Our college is always looking at ways to assist others and I recently discovered that St Mary’s Centacare desperately needs donations of ‘warm food’,” he said.<\/p>\n

“Warm food refers to any items that could be cooked or reheated but won’t spoil in the meantime. Cans of soup, stew, beans, rice, packet noodles etc are the types of food items that would be welcome.”<\/p>\n

Students were asked to bring in just one item for the collection.<\/p>\n

Centacare co-ordinator Louise Judge<\/strong> said the donated food was most gratefully received and would be distributed to members of the South Burnett community who require assistance.<\/p>\n

The organisation currently assists between 80 and 100 families every week and, sadly, the number has been growing.<\/p>\n

“This has been the trend for months,” Louise said.<\/p>\n

“We used to shop once a month to stock up supplies; we now shop twice a week.”<\/p>\n

She said those seeking help were not just people receiving Centrelink benefits; Centacare had assisted working families and even small business owners.<\/p>\n

She said the items donated by the St Mary’s pupils were “all good solid food” such as pasta, meaty soups and tinned vegetables … just what people required during winter.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
