Everyone knows that the retiring CEO of SB Care, Doug Henderson, is a community champion, but now it’s official.<\/p>\n

Doug was today presented with a Inclusive Community Champion Award by the Spinal Injuries Association.<\/p>\n

Six awards were presented by the association’s General Manager (Community Development) John Mayo in a small ceremony at the South Burnett Regional Council chambers in Kingaroy this afternoon.<\/p>\n

Doug was presented with the award for “Best Individual” for his tireless efforts working in the community over at least the past 17 years.<\/p>\n

Other awards were presented to:<\/strong><\/p>\n

    \n
  • South Burnett Regional Council<\/strong> – Best Recreation Precinct, Kingaroy Town Hall and Dr Ellen Kent Hughes Forecourt for the seamless access from vehicles to each of the service areas<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
      \n
    • Kingaroy RSL Club<\/strong> – Highly Commended Community Service Provider for the excellent access from the carpark and easy access throughout the building, and the excellent culture amongst staff<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
        \n
      • South Burnett Regional Council<\/strong> – Best Community Service Provider, T.J. O\u2019Neill Memorial Library<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
          \n
        • Ascot Motor Lodge<\/strong> – Best Accommodation Provider, for the seamless transition from car to room and other facilities including reception and the restaurant<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
            \n
          • South Burnett Regional Council<\/strong> – Best Government Department, Kingaroy Customer Service Centre<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

            Mr Mayo said it was the fourth year that the association had been presenting awards, but it was the first time any had been awarded in the South Burnett region.<\/p>\n

            He said the awards were a way of thanking individuals, businesses and organisation who were doing things to create an inclusive community.<\/p>\n

            They were also a reminder to the wider community that creating an inclusive community also maximised the social and economic performance of a region.<\/p>\n

            Mr Mayo said the awards were not about “disability access”, a term which he said had been created by the able-bodied community but which meant nothing.<\/p>\n

            He said it was about delivering equitable services and equitable opportunities as required by law, ie to create a “no gaps” community.<\/p>\n

            Mr Mayo said there was an economic benefit to developing “no gaps” in services as more than 18 per cent of the community have a disability of some sort, 13 per cent at any one time have a temporary injury, almost 20 per cent have arthritis plus Australia’s ageing population.<\/p>\n

            Awards have been presented across nine different regions this year with the State finals to be held in November.<\/p>\n

            Cr Damien Tessmann noted that some of the thanks for the awards for the new Council facilities should be given to former Council CEO Tony Hayward who had amended plans to assure ease of access and convenience.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
