Kingaroy State High School student Leilani Doge has received a commendation for her entry in the State Government\u2019s 2013 Buy Smart Competition. <\/p>\n

Member for Nanango Deb Frecklington said it was wonderful that a local student had been acknowledged in the competition, which asked students to put on their thinking caps and show how future generations are tackling the issue of consumer awareness head on. <\/p>\n

The 2013 Buy Smart Competition competition winners were presented with their awards and cash prizes totalling $12,000 by Attorney-General Jarrod Bleijie at a ceremony in Parliament House today, <\/p>\n

Mr Bleijie said it had been a tough decision picking the winners, and he congratulated all students who thought outside the box and came up with something unique. <\/p>\n

“This year we received 551 entries from more than 1200 students across the State ranging from films, board and computer games and even a papier-mache octopus money box. Every year we have some fantastic entries, and this year was no exception.”<\/p>\n

Mr Bleijie said the annual competition, which is open to school age children from Years 4 to 12, required students to research a financial or consumer issue and present what they learned in a creative and innovative way.<\/p>\n

“The age at which children start participating in the marketplace is younger than ever before,” he said. <\/p>\n

“Every day our kids are bombarded with new technologies and mass marketing. It\u2019s becoming more and more important for them to know their rights as consumers.<\/p>\n

“Smartphones are being used at a younger age, with 34 per cent of children in Years 4 to 6 and 94 per cent of children in Years 11 and 12 having mobile phones.<\/p>\n

“Learning how to avoid racking up mobile phone bills is just one of the many lessons students learn from Buy Smart.<\/p>\n

“This competition is a great way for teachers and parents to get students thinking about budgeting, saving, staying out of debt and avoiding scams – all important skills for later life.”<\/p>\n

Leilani received her commendation for a Schoolies Week poster designed to emphasise safety.<\/p>\n
