Portfolio chairperson Cr Barry Green said at today’s meeting of the South Burnett Regional Council.

This year, Council has budgeted almost $10 million for upgrades to the region’s ageing water and sewerage assets as part of a 10-year, $90 million replacement program.

Cr Green said that so far, all projects are proceeding on schedule:

Water Mains
The council will also soon call for expressions of interest on upgrades to the Gordonbrook Water Treatment Plant and the Kingaroy Wastewater Treatment Plant.

Calling for expressions of interest is the preliminary step to calling for tenders for both projects and is stipulated by law.

At present, many parts of the Gordonbrook Water Treatment Plant are in poor condition and the treatment process is unable to achieve the water quality levels required by the Australian Drinking Water Guidelines for taste and odour.

Because of this, the Council has decided to build a new water treatment plant adjacent to the existing one and re-use some of its components.

The upgrade will also allow more efficient operation of the plant because the current systems are predominantly manual and require constant operator attendance when running.

Meanwhile, the 70-year-old Kingaroy Wastewater Treatment Plant has reached its capacity; the majority of its major structures are in poor condition and the treatment process is unable to achieve the levels now required for effluent quality before it’s discharged into the environment.

Tenders for both projects are expected to be called next financial year.

Upgrades to the
