A book re-telling the life story of Nanango pioneer Jacob Goode – the man behind the famous Goode’s Inn at Nanango – is planned to be the first in a series about the Burnett’s colourful characters of the 1840s.<\/p>\n

\u201cJacob Goode and his Burnett Inn\u201d has been written by Nanango historian and author Dr Judith Grimes<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Dr Grimes, who is a high school teacher and family historian, has\u00a0published many books, including local histories of Nanango Shire, Wooroolin State School, Kingaroy State School and Memerambi.<\/p>\n

Her latest work will be officially launched at a wine and cheese night at Ringsfield House in Nanango from 5:30pm on Monday, October 21.<\/p>\n

Then on Wednesday, October 23, Dr Grimes will speak about her book at a function at Kingaroy Library from 10:00am.<\/p>\n

The biography of Jacob Goode – a butcher, accountant and publican – delivers insights into the early history of Nanango and south-east Queensland.<\/p>\n

Goode arrived in Sydney in the early 1830s and became one of the colourful characters of the early settlement of Moreton Bay and the licensee of the South Brisbane Hotel.<\/p>\n

He built\u00a0the Burnett Inn\u00a0– the first commercial building in Nanango – beside a waterhole in 1848 and the township soon began to grow around it.<\/p>\n

The inn – popularly known as Goodes Inn – also served as the Nanango post office from January 5, 1852.<\/p>\n
