The third annual Mental Health Week Art Competition was officially opened at the Kingaroy Art Gallery on Friday night.<\/p>\n

Artists from throughout the South Burnett competed for cash prizes donated by the Kingaroy Lions Club.<\/p>\n

The competition is part of local celebrations for Mental Health Week 2013, which aims to raise awareness of the importance of mental health and well-being in the wider community.<\/p>\n

Judge for the competition was Maryborough painter and sculptor Sophia Holm, a qualified art teacher.<\/p>\n

“I was impressed by the range of art and the skills displayed,” Sophia said.<\/p>\n

“But what engaged me the most was the diversity, and the courage that the artists showed to put their work on display.<\/p>\n

“It is fantastic. It should be Mental Health Week every week!”<\/p>\n

The artworks will be on display at the gallery for the month of October.<\/p>\n

NB. The opening also allowed a sneak peek at the “Depressed Cakes” which are another part of this year’s Mental Health Week effort in the South Burnett. Depressed Cakes, made by Kathy Cope from “Cake and Whimsy”, will be popping up at Gloria Jean’s Coffees in Shoppingworld on Thursday (October 10).<\/p>\n
