Feeling depressed? Maybe a cake could help … but what about a cake that’s grey or black and gloomy?<\/p>\n

This is a “Depressed Cake” and it’s the latest worldwide phenomenon which is about to hit the South Burnett, and it’s all in name of a good cause.<\/p>\n

Depressed Cake Shops are pop-up shops which provide \u00a0a\u00a0range of cakes and sweet treats with an important message.<\/p>\n

The idea began in the United Kingdom as a PR stunt for raising mental health awareness.<\/p>\n

Depressed Cake Shops began springing up across Europe and the US over the past year.<\/p>\n

The idea is to set up a shop for\u00a0a limited time \u2013 usually not more than a few days \u2013 which stocks cakes, biscuits and other\u00a0treats that are grey or black on the outside.<\/p>\n

Some will sport black fondant rain clouds or black dogs, others have messages about depression on them.<\/p>\n

Inside is a different story, as the\u00a0cakes are bright and colourful.<\/p>\n

Kingaroy cake maker Kathy Cope, of Cake and Whimsy, has been following the progress of the\u00a0Depressed Cake Shop<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0for some time before\u00a0approaching mental health groups in the area about staging an event locally.<\/p>\n

\u201cI loved the concept from the moment I saw it,\u201d Kathy said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt combines creativity and cake\u00a0decorating with community. It\u2019s a novel way to grab people\u2019s attention. \u00a0The group I\u2019m\u00a0working with has taken the idea and just run with it!\u201d<\/p>\n

Kathy is working with the South Burnett Suicide Prevention group to stage a Depressed Cake\u00a0Shop event to coincide with national Mental Health Awareness Week in early October.<\/p>\n

Baking and decorating will take place at Centacare\u2019s commercial kitchen and volunteers are\u00a0welcome to come along and help out.<\/p>\n

The location will be announced\u00a0shortly.<\/p>\n

As a precursor, Kathy will manning a Depressed Cake Table at the South Burnett\u00a0Mental Health Week Art Exhibition at the Kingaroy Art Gallery on Friday. October 4, from 6:00pm.<\/p>\n

Mental Health Week runs from October 6-12. It is a national event aimed at\u00a0educating and engaging the public about mental health issues in Australia.<\/p>\n

A Depressed Cake Shop will be popping-up at Gloria Jean’s Coffees in Kingaroy on Thursday, October 10.
