Proston Park in Rodney Street, Proston, is going to be renamed “Railway Park” at the request of the local community.<\/p>\n

The new name was announced at today’s monthly South Burnett Regional Council meeting after the SBRC undertook public consultations.<\/p>\n

Mayor Wayne Kratzmann said he was “a little bit disappointed” with the choice.<\/p>\n

“As a Council we don’t often have the opportunity to name public places, especially in small towns and villages. So personally, I would’ve preferred to see something in the name that reflected one of the area’s pioneers,” he said.<\/p>\n

“All the same, this is what the people of Proston decided, and we will respect what our communities want.”<\/p>\n

The park was the site of the town’s former railway terminus.<\/p>\n

Proston was connected to Murgon by a branch line from 1923 through to 1993. This serviced the town’s former timber mill and butter factory as well as providing general passenger and freight services.<\/p>\n

Last December, Council announced plans to begin a multi-stage development of the park which will ultimately include upgrading an existing BMX track; erecting a picnic shelter and barbecue; building sets of tables and chairs for visitors; installing lighting; constructing an amphitheatre; developing walking and cycling trails; and landscaping.<\/p>\n

Cr Kathy Duff said Council had already done a lot of work on the park, and had carried out consultations with community groups like the Proston Lions Club on the name change, as well as having a public suggestion box at Proston Library.<\/p>\n

“Railway Park” had been the most popular choice, she said.<\/p>\n

The park (with its new name) will be officially opened on October 11 at 11:00am.<\/p>\n
