No more registration tags?<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Amendments to the Animal Care and Protection Act announced by the State Government this week look like spelling an end to cat registrations in the South Burnett Regional Council area.<\/p>\n

On Thursday, Agriculture Minister John McVeigh announced increased penalties for animal cruelty, a streamlining of the processes for making dangerous dog destruction orders, and the reversal of statewide mandatory cat registration.<\/p>\n

This last piece of news came as a surprise to South Burnett Mayor Wayne Kratzmann who said he first heard about it at a Wide Bay Burnett Regional Organisation of Councils (WBBROC) meeting yesterday.<\/p>\n

He said it was welcome news but would have to be processed by Council.<\/p>\n

“I always thought the legislation was ridiculous,” he told southburnett.com.au<\/strong> today.<\/p>\n

“It was another cost that we didn’t need, another onerous job put on council that we copped a lot of flak for.”<\/p>\n

Mayor Kratzmann said repealing mandatory cat registrations was another piece of “common sense” coming from the State Government.<\/p>\n

He said the recent changes to Liquor Licensing laws which had made it easier for community groups to hold events should also be applauded.<\/p>\n
