The $1.27 million Performing Arts Block at Kingaroy State High School was officially opened today in a ceremony in front of students and invited guests.<\/p>\n

The block is Stage 1 of the proposed Kingaroy Performing Arts Centre.<\/p>\n

Mrs Lesley Case, the widow of the school’s first instrumental music teacher Laurie Case, unveiled the opening plaque.<\/p>\n

She also presented the school with a hand-made wooden “Case baton”, a craft that her husband learned while at Kingaroy State High School.<\/p>\n

Principal David Ballin also paid tribute to Mr Case, who died in Brisbane late last year.<\/p>\n

The instrumental music practice room in the new building will be named in his memory.<\/p>\n

P&C president Debbie Jackson told the assembly the building was the culmination of years of meetings, planning and fundraising.<\/p>\n

She said it would be a major asset for the school and the community, and she was pleased that the project had been completed “debt-free”.<\/p>\n

Funding came from Education Queensland ($512,000), Kingaroy State High School ($160,000), South Burnett Regional Council ($42,500), Stanwell’s Community Partnership Fund ($35,000), KSHS Student Council ($2500), KSHS P&C ($507,712) and other donations ($19,035).<\/p>\n

But she reminded everyone the job was only “half done” as Stage 2, which will consist of a performance area, a multi-use exhibition space and a coffee shop, was still to be built.<\/p>\n

“We have reached the base camp of Everest but we still have the summit to ascend,” she said.<\/p>\n

“But working together everything is possible.”<\/p>\n

The ceremony also included performances from the school’s vocal group, stage band and concert band, Dance Krew dancers, and the\u00a0Year 12 drama and dance classes.<\/p>\n
