South Burnett councillors are called on to do some strange things at times… and Sunday was no exception for Division 5 councillor Kathy Duff.<\/p>\n

At 9:00am, Cr Duff officiated at the “opening” of one of the Wondai Kindergarten’s two new highway billboards.<\/p>\n

The large signs have been erected on the Bunya Highway between Tingoora and Wondai on the southern approach to the town, and near Up Country Bed & Breakfast on the northern approach.<\/p>\n

Wondai Kindy president Jane Iszlaub said the signs were “awareness-raisers” to let locals and visitors know that Wondai has a kindy where children between the ages of 3 and 5 can be prepped for school.<\/p>\n

“We also have a lot of working mums in the Wondai area and the kindy is a real help for them,” she said.<\/p>\n

The kindy’s committee received a grant to pay for the billboards and local supporters helped with finding locations for the signs and erecting them.<\/p>\n

The South Burnett Regional Council also came to the party, waiving most of the fees and charges that usually apply to erecting new road signs because of the kindy’s not-for-profit status.<\/p>\n

“Council were incredibly helpful and we can’t speak highly enough about them,” Jane said.<\/p>\n

“So when we got the signs up we asked Cr Duff if she’d do the honours and open them for us.”<\/p>\n

As it happened, Cr Duff was on her way to Wondai on Sunday morning to take part in Reserve Forces Day.<\/p>\n

So she came a little earlier than planned to perform the ceremony.<\/p>\n
