Wooroolin State School celebrated its 125th birthday recently in the shade of the massive camphor laurel tree planted in the schoolgrounds on an Arbor Day many decades ago.

The celebration was organised by the school’s P&C committee, headed up by Tim Weller.

The Weller family has a strong connection to the school, as four generations of the clan have attended classes at Wooroolin.

The family donated a tree to be planted on the day as well as a commemorative boulder and plaque to record the anniversary.

The Wooroolin State School is small – there are just 21 students enrolled at present – but the school spirit is strong, and the fact a new toilet block was installed last year by Education Queensland augurs well for its future.

Ex-students and their families, as well as ex-teachers and a couple of former principals attended the anniversary celebration.

There were many displays to browse in the classrooms, music room and library.

The volunteers at the Goomeri Lions chip van and the Wooroolin Lions sausage sizzle were kept busy, as were the Wooroolin QCWA members who were offering scones, tea and coffee.

Acting principal Leanne Hohnke-Jansen said the “truly remarkable milestone” of 125 years was not only honouring “a number” but “a legacy”.

“A school anniversary is about much more than the passing of time,” she said.

“It’s about people, community, memories and the generations that have contributed to making this school the special place it is today.”

She said there were just 18 students enrolled when the Wooroolin Provisional School opened on February 18, 1901.

Member for Nanango Deb Frecklington singled out the unique Wooroolin Bugle Band for praise during her speech.

The said the band had followed the school through the generations and the community should be very proud of its legacy.
