Button batteries are very dangerous if swallowed<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Queensland Health has issued an alert to parents following the death of a child on the Sunshine Coast at the weekend.<\/p>\n

The four-year-old died after swallowing a small, button-shaped lithium battery.<\/p>\n

She was taken to Noosa Hospital on Sunday with stomach bleeding, and then transferred to Royal Brisbane Hospital where she died.<\/p>\n

Queensland Health said parents should always<\/p>\n

    \n
  • Make sure there are no loose batteries within any child\u2019s reach.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
      \n
    • Always change button batteries on a surface out of reach of a child.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
        \n
      • Make sure the battery cover on devices are secure so your child can\u2019t remove them.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
          \n
        • Store button batteries like you would medication, ie out of reach of your children.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

          Once swallowed, button batteries may leak which can cause internal corrosive injuries to the gastrointestinal tract and the oesophagus.<\/p>\n

          Significant injuries can occur in less than two hours.<\/strong><\/p>\n

          Symptoms include\u00a0chest pain,\u00a0coughing,\u00a0nausea or vomiting,\u00a0diarrhoea,\u00a0abdominal pain, and\u00a0fever.<\/p>\n

          The stomach is an acidic environment which can erode the battery seal, potentially releasing chemicals.<\/p>\n

          Lithium batteries are generally higher voltage and can cause major complications in the oesophagus, and in extreme cases, such as occurred at the weekend, death.<\/p>\n

          Button batteries are found in many common devices including\u00a0hearing aids,\u00a0games and toys,\u00a0watches,\u00a0calculators,\u00a0torches and laser lights, and\u00a0remote control devices.<\/p>\n

          Parents must ensure that all flat batteries are disposed of properly and all other batteries are kept out of reach of children.<\/p>\n

          If parents suspect their child has swallowed a button battery, or has placed one in his\/her nose, they should seek medical attention immediately. Do not give any food or water. \u00a0In an emergency, call Triple Zero (000).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
