Biosecurity Queensland has advised that Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) has been detected in commercial pigs in Queensland.<\/p>\n

This follows earlier detections in a person and in commercial pigs in May and a detection in a feral pig in June.<\/p>\n

JEV circulates between mosquitoes, birds, and pigs, and should be considered a potential risk when mosquitoes are present.<\/p>\n

A Biosecurity Queensland spokesperson said an increase in mosquitos was expected as the weather warms.<\/p>\n

“Producers should include mosquito management as part of their biosecurity planning,” the spokesperson said.<\/p>\n

JEV is a reportable disease in Queensland.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Anyone who suspects an animal is showing signs of JEV should report it to Biosecurity Queensland on 13-25-23.<\/p>\n

JEV causes reproductive losses in pigs and neurological symptoms in horses, including incoordination, difficulty swallowing and impaired vision.<\/p>\n

Humans can catch catch JEV, but only from mosquitos. It cannot be transmitted from infected animals or from human to human.<\/p>\n

People working with pigs, including those with small herds or pets, should take steps to control mosquitoes, avoid exposure to mosquitoes and get vaccinated against JEV.<\/p>\n
