It was a very busy weekend in the South Burnett, but the rescheduled Murgon Show last Saturday was still a popular outing for many families … especially the rodeo and fireworks on Saturday night.<\/p>\n

The 102nd Murgon Show had been due to be held on March 13-14 but was postponed after torrential rain earlier in the week in the South Burnett.<\/p>\n

The weather was perfect last weekend, although a bit chillier at night than the original date would have been!<\/p>\n

Show Society president Josh Steinhardt said it had been a good show, with record entries in the pavilion and more than 100 head in the cattle competitions.<\/p>\n

A new event this year was a display of Clydesdale horses, held near the poultry pavilion.<\/p>\n

Other equestrian events included a Stockman’s Challenge in the main ring, as well as a cutting competition and led classes.<\/p>\n

Josh said a good crowd had gathered for the official opening, but it really started to build up ahead of the evening rodeo.<\/p>\n

The show was officially opened by retired Murgon and Wondai vet, Dr Chris Braithwaite.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Chris spoke about his family’s long involvement with the Murgon Show.<\/p>\n

A long-standing Murgon Show tradition, the blessing of the plough, was conducted at the opening ceremony by Pastor Chris Downes, from the Murgon Baptist Church.<\/p>\n

The blessing honours farmers past, present and future as well as praying for a good harvest.<\/p>\n

Member for Wide Bay Llew O’Brien and South Burnett Mayor Kathy Duff also spoke at the opening, and Murgon Show Society patroness Gladys Sippel cut the cake.<\/p>\n
