{"id":373709,"date":"2026-06-26T13:14:28","date_gmt":"2026-06-26T03:14:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/?p=373709"},"modified":"2026-06-26T13:14:28","modified_gmt":"2026-06-26T03:14:28","slug":"crackdown-on-dangerous-drivers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/2026\/06\/26\/crackdown-on-dangerous-drivers\/","title":{"rendered":"Crackdown On Dangerous Drivers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>June 26, 2026<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">The State Government plans to <\/span>ramp up penalties for dangerous drivers in two new pieces of legislation introduced into Parliament this week.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Changes include:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Increasing maximum penalties for some motor vehicle offences, including up to seven years&#8217; jail where no death or grievous bodily harm is caused, and up to 25 years&#8217; jail where death or grievous bodily harm occurs<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Increasing minimum licence disqualification periods, especially for offences involving death or grievous bodily harm, aggravated offending and repeat offenders<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Expanding mandatory jail requirements for serious and repeat dangerous driving offenders<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>From December 1:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Doubled penalties for drug driving, with higher fines and longer licence disqualifications<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Stronger penalties for combined drink and drug offences<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Minimum court-imposed fines<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Immediate six-month licence suspensions for drivers caught more than 40km\/h over the speed limit<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Improved seatbelt enforcement, allowing drivers to nominate adult passengers so the right person is held accountable<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Next year, the State Government also plans to streamline roadside drug testing, enabling more tests and faster enforcement, introduce a mandatory drug-driving education program to tackle repeat offending; and strengthen enforcement of camera-detected seatbelt offences.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDangerous drivers and violent offenders are putting lives at risk, and these changes ensure the consequences match that behaviour,\u201d Attorney-General Deb Frecklington said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The State Government plans to ramp up penalties for dangerous drivers in two new pieces of legislation introduced into Parliament this week.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":20,"featured_media":93665,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[3,24],"tags":[1132],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v19.11 -
