{"id":373328,"date":"2026-06-16T20:59:59","date_gmt":"2026-06-16T10:59:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/?p=373328"},"modified":"2026-06-16T21:00:53","modified_gmt":"2026-06-16T11:00:53","slug":"bom-confirms-el-nino","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/2026\/06\/16\/bom-confirms-el-nino\/","title":{"rendered":"BOM Confirms El Ni\u00f1o"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>June 16, 2026<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Bureau of Meteorology confirmed on Tuesday that the El Ni\u00f1o-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) &#8211; a key driver of Australian weather conditions &#8211; is now in an El Ni\u00f1o phase.<\/p>\n<p>A BOM spokesperson said El Ni\u00f1o often brings drier conditions to central and eastern Australia in winter and spring, but Australia\u2019s weather was also shaped by other climate factors, so outcomes could vary.<\/p>\n<p>The last El Ni\u00f1o was a moderate to strong event that developed in Spring 2023 and lasted into early 2024.<\/p>\n<p><strong>BOM issued a July-to-September long-range forecast on June 11 which predicted:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Rainfall was likely to be below average across parts of southern and eastern Australia<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Temperatures were likely to be above average in most areas, except parts of the north<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>BOM emphasised that &#8220;below average rainfall&#8221; does not mean no rain, just less than usual, and that every El Ni\u00f1o was different.<\/p>\n<p>Rainfall and temperature impacts can vary from one El Ni\u00f1o event to another, eg. winter to spring rainfall in 2002 was very different from 2015.<\/p>\n<p>El Ni\u00f1o events usually last from six to 12 months, though in some rare cases, they have persisted for up to two years.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Bureau of Meteorology confirmed on Tuesday that the El Ni\u00f1o-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) &#8211; a key driver of Australian weather conditions &#8211; is now in an El Ni\u00f1o phase.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":20,"featured_media":373329,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[3,36],"tags":[1134],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v19.11 -
