id="caption-attachment-372775" class="wp-caption-text">A drawing by Arkhright Architects which shows how the new Coles supermarket and parking area could look

June 2, 2026

South Burnett Regional Council has approved an application by Coles to build a supermarket complex on the vacant land in Pound Street, Kingaroy.

The project will include a 245-space car park, including nine disability parking spaces; there will also be eight motorbike spots and eight bicycle places.

The redevelopment will stretch from Pound Street through to Kingaroy Street, with the main entry for vehicles via Kingaroy Street.

A redesigned Kingaroy / Baron Street intersection will include traffic lights and new turning lanes on both the north and south sides of the intersection.

There will also be entries from Pound Street for “click and collect” shoppers and service vehicles.

Pedestrian access will also be possible from the “duck pond” parklands adjacent to the South Burnett Care building.

The Development Approval has a six-year lifespan but southburnett.com.au understands construction is expected to begin this year.

A Development Permit to begin earthworks has also been granted.

The main building, on the eastern side of the block, will house a Coles supermarket as well as three speciality shops.

A stand-alone, drive-thru fast food outlet will be located on the western side.

The conditions of the Development Approval include landscaping and screening to reduce noise.

A landscape concept design report which accompanied the application stressed that Coles Kingaroy aimed to provide amenity for the new development “while referencing and contributing to the character of the area”.

“The design embraces the woodland character of the sites adjoining community-driven open spaces and parklands, buffering the development’s built form with landscape characters which are complementary to its context,” the report stated.

Extensive flood mapping and noise studies accompanied the application to Council.

The approval also includes the relocation of an existing sewer main across the block.

The successful Development Application, from Coles Group Property Developments Ltd, brings to an end a saga which began after Kingaroy Shire Council shifted its depot to Ivins Street in 2005.

The former depot site in Pound Street has been vacant since then.

Over the years, Kingaroy Council – and then the amalgamated South Burnett Regional Council – tested market interest for the Pound Street block on several occasions.

Extensive rehabilitation, which included the removal of tonnes of soil, was completed in 2013 which allowed the block to be removed from the State Government’s Contaminated Land Register which increased its attractiveness to potential developers.

Related articles:

Coles Linked To
