State Emergency Service Deputy Local Controller (South Burnett) Amanda Johnson has been presented with an Emergency Services Medal (ESM) at Government House in Brisbane.<\/p>\n

Amanda, the former Nanango SES Group Leader, was recognised in the 2026 Australia Day Honours List for her distinguished service as a member of an Australian Emergency Service.<\/p>\n

She has been a member of the SES for more than 16 years.<\/p>\n

Her citation notes her extensive operational experience, including flood and swift water rescues, storm damage response, search and rescue for missing persons, incident management, and the recovery of deceased individuals.<\/strong><\/p>\n

“She has been regularly deployed into high-risk flood zones to perform life-saving rescues, evacuate residents and conduct welfare checks, often in hazardous conditions involving fast-moving water, low visibility, and unstable terrain,” the citation continues.<\/p>\n

“Her calm leadership, sound judgment, and operational skill have been critical in these situations.<\/p>\n

“Ms Johnson has also played a vital role in storm damage response following cyclones, hailstorms, and severe wind events.\u00a0Her duties include clearing fallen trees, securing damaged roofs, stabilising structures, and preventing further harm to life and property. These tasks are physically demanding, often conducted in dangerous conditions and over extended periods.<\/p>\n

“In search and rescue operations, Ms Johnson has contributed to complex land and water-based missions requiring strong navigation, endurance and teamwork.<\/strong><\/p>\n

“She has carried out numerous body recoveries under deeply confronting circumstances, where her professionalism and compassion have earned the respect of her peers and partner agencies.<\/p>\n

“In her current role as the deputy local controller for training, Ms Johnson has played a vital role in strengthening frontline capability.<\/p>\n

“She is highly experienced in incident management and regularly supports the coordination of large-scale responses through planning, logistics, and operational decision-making.<\/p>\n

“Ms Johnson continues to train regularly, participate in inter-agency exercises, and enhance capability across the SES. She is recognised for her sustained excellence, resilience in confronting situations, and dedicated service to the Queensland SES and the Queensland community.<\/p>\n

Queensland Governor Dr Jeannette Young AC PSM pinned on the award during an investiture ceremony in front of other emergency services personnel on May 14.<\/p>\n
