A small commemoration service was held at the Nanango war memorial on Saturday morning to remember the service of the more than 39,000 Australia Defence Force members who served in Australia’s longest war.<\/p>\n

The Nanango RSL Sub-Branch organised the annual Afghanistan Day service, which included a wreath-laying ceremony to honour their service as well as remember the 47 Australians who died during the conflict.<\/p>\n

Celebrant Lowrian Redsell conducted the service, which included prayers by Nanango Baptist Pastor Bill Hogan and a short speech by local councillor Jane Erkens.<\/p>\n

“Australian forces played their part in a multi-national attempt to bring security to Afghanistan and stabilise the wider region, quash terrorist activity and provide safe conditions for democratic governance and reconstruction,” Ms Redsell said.<\/p>\n

Cr Erkens said the commemoration acknowledged the fact that service does not end when a uniform is taken off.<\/strong><\/p>\n

“For many veterans, the memories of war and the experiences of their service remain with them long after they return home,” Cr Erkens said.<\/p>\n

“Some carry physical wounds while some carry the unseen wounds of trauma.<\/p>\n

“Their strength in facing these challenges deserve our respect, out understanding and our ongoing support.”<\/p>\n
